Special Events
As an Honors student at the University of Connecticut, you will have access to many Honors events, which are designed to give students the chance to experience new ideas, discuss current issues, listen to guest speakers, and learn about opportunities on campus. Attending Honors events helps you connect with the Honors community and meet new people, while participating in enriching activities.
The choices for Honors events are seemingly endless: special guest lectures, thesis-writing seminars, study abroad workshops, and theatrical performances are some examples. Others include:
- Every academic year, the Honors Program sponsors the “Last Lecture Series,” in which prominent professors from various departments are invited to give a lecture as though it were the last they would ever give.
- In the fall and spring semester, the program holds professional development workshops which include information on applying for, securing funds for, and surviving graduate school, internships, and law school.
- In 2005 and 2006, Dr. Goodstein or Dr. Lease Butts took students to the Connecticut Repertoire Theatre’s performances of Stop Kiss, Into The Woods, Prudence, Balloon, and As You Like It. The students also had dinner in South Dining with either Dr. Goodstein or Dr. Lease Butts.
- In 2005 and 2006, various distinguished speakers came to UConn and Honors students were able to have discussion groups with them. Ahmed Kathrada, a South African anti-apartheid and human rights activist, and Dr. John Rowe, the executive chairman and former CEO of Aetna, Inc., spoke with Honors students and the general UConn body.
So when you attend Honors events, you are not only involving yourself in the UConn community and the cultural, academic, and social aspects of university life, but you are also earning credit toward your Sophomore Certificate requirements.
