Honors Advisor FAQ's
How can I find out about Honors Program deadlines?
Deadlines are posted on the Forms page or are on the forms themselves. The Graduation Checklist has helpful deadlines for graduating students. back to top
My advisee is missing appointments and is not responsive when I contact him/her. What should I do?
The student is the one ultimately responsible for his/her graduation. The advisor can make reasonable attempts to contact him/her, but isn’t responsible should the student choose to ignore those attempts. However, if the advisor is concerned about the student’s well-being and/or safety, it would be worthwhile to share those concerns with Residential Life. back to top
How does doing a thesis outside a student’s major work?
The student must get approval to do a thesis in a related area from his honors advisor. He will then secure a thesis advisor who works in the related area who will teach the thesis course in her department. This course will be recorded on the student’s plan of study. The end product, the thesis, must be approved by both the honors and thesis advisors. back to top
Do Advanced Placement (AP) and Early College Experience (ECE) work affect a student’s GPA? How do I find out what kind of credit a student is getting from AP and ECE?
The only credit that affects a student’s UConn GPA is UConn credit. That includes any courses taken at UConn Storrs, a branch campus, or ECE. AP and transfer credit from other institutions will give a student credit, but not a grade. To learn more about ECE, contact the ECE Office. To learn about how AP credit transfers to UConn, see page 23 of the Undergraduate Catalog. back to top
How do I find out what the various departmental requirements are for students to graduate as an Honors Scholar?
The first and most effective step is to contact the honors advisor in that department. The Honors Program has a list but cannot guarantee its accuracy. back to top
Can the 12 credits a student must take in his/her third and fourth years come from anywhere besides the department in which he/she is majoring?

How can I see whether or not a student has taken honors credit?
When a student has completed a course taken for honors credit and received a grade of B- or better, a notation will be made on his/her transcript. If a course is in progress, PeopleSoft will note that the grading basis of the course is “honors”. back to top
Is graduation as an Honors Scholar noted on a student’s diploma or transcript?
It is noted on the diploma. For the transcript, "Honors Scholar in Good Standing" will be noted after each semester while a student is active in the Honors program. back to top
Can a student do work off campus and have it count as the three credit hours that must come from thesis work?

Does a student have to wait until the third and fourth years to take graduate classes?
Any student who has a GPA of 2.6 or above and who is in his/her seventh or eighth semester may take a graduate course. (See page 92 of the Undergraduate Catalog.) If a student who does not meet those criteria wants to take a graduate class, he/she must receive approval from the professor of the course and the dean of the school in which the student is registered. However, usually students do wait until their third and fourth years. back to top

I have a student who would be very successful in the Honors Program. Who should I direct her to and what materials can I give her?

The Honors Program’s website also contains valuable information about admissions for current UConn students. back to top
