Roles and Responsibilities of Honors Advisors
-
Keep up-to-date on, and share information about, Honors with the rest of the department, including information about conversions and thesis advising.
- Monitor department curriculum in terms of availability of courses and how juniors and seniors will navigate those courses.
- Recruit rising sophomores and juniors for the Honors Program.
- Be a member of the honors community by doing such things as teaching a first year seminar, reading ‘Updates in Honors”, and sharing ideas with the Honors Program staff.
- Be accessible and perform routine advising tasks such as raising bars, giving advice about course selection, assisting with registration, and giving advice about Honors Program requirements.
- Provide guidance regarding research, potential thesis plans, and post-graduation plans. Be informative about resources such as faculty who might serve as thesis or research advisors and options for the future (graduate school, careers, internships).
- Participate in new student Orientation. Advisors will be contacted by the Honors Program staff in April.
- Honors students are encouraged to participate in the first eight or nine Orientation sessions so that they may be assigned to honors Orientation groups, attend an information session presented by Honors staff, and register under the supervision of Honors staff.
- Honors advisors may be asked to assist with the registration of students in their departments. This provides advisors with an opportunity to meet their students and the students benefit from their advisors’ expertise.
