UConn Honors in Cape Town immerses the students into the living history of South Africa by involving them in institutions that are wrestling with South Africa's troubled past and creating a modern, democratic civil society. Students are working in a non-governmental agency whose mission is to address issues of social injustice as it impacts upon formerly disenfranchised South Africans, women, children, workers, and the environment. SUBMIT YOUR WORK TO HONORS AND THE ARTS
DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 14, 2010 (11:59 pm)
The Honors and the Arts event series will continue this semester with a student art show and competition, and ALL Honors students are invited to submit their artwork! This year’s competition will have three categories of artwork: Painting/Drawing, Photography, and Other (including 3-D and multimedia pieces). Each artist can submit up to four pieces total, and they can be in the same or different categories. The winner from each category will win a prize and have their work displayed as part of the Honors Program Student Art Gallery!
Deadline for submissions: email your name, titles of submissions, and a photo of each piece to honorsevents@uconn.edu by Sunday, February 14 at 11:59 pm.
Everyone is encouraged to attend the Art Show and Competition to support your fellow Honors students and vote on your favorite pieces. Your votes will determine the finalists in each category, and a panel of celebrity judges will choose the winners. There will be free food and entertainment at the show!! THIS COUNTS AS AN HONORS EVENT.

Each year the Honors Council, the student governing body, and the Honors Program select the recipient of the Honors Faculty Member of the Year Award. Winners of the award are nominated by students who have had some sort of official interaction with the faculty member and who feel that they benefited greatly from that interaction. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR HONORS STUDENTS!
Applications for the OAKLAWN SCHOLARSHIP are now available!!!
DEADLINE: APRIL 1, 2010
Each year, the Honors Program opens the Oaklawn Scholarship competition to well-qualified sophomores and juniors. Students are eligible to apply if they did NOT receive merit financial aid from the University. Recipients of this prestigious scholarship are chosen according to academic excellence, involvement in the Honors community, and leadership values. Up to 4 chosen students will receive awards of up to $2,000 per year ($1,000 per semester) to be applied directly to the student’s fee bill.

Honors Program Life Sciences Honors Thesis Research Grant is still available!!!
To support the completion of honors theses in the life sciences, the Office of the Provost has provided funding to support honors thesis research for the 2009-2010 academic year. Funding may be used to support laboratory costs or to purchase consumables, and funding must apply to the execution of research leading to the completion of the honors thesis. Application reviews begin Thursday, October 1, 2009. Applications will be accepted through May 1, 2010 or until all funding has been exhausted. Click here for more information

The Dept. of Defense scholarship opportunity is designated for juniors, seniors, and masters students interested in information assurance. One of the requirements for eligibility is that you must be pursuing a course of study and/or have a declared major with an information assurance concentration in one of the scientific, technical or managerial disciplines related to computer and network security.

HIRA JAIN SCHOLARSHIP
DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 10, 2010
Dr. Hira Jain and Mrs. Sunita Jain established a permanent endowment fund to provide scholarships for academically outstanding incoming or continuing undergraduate or graduate students enrolled full time at UConn. Priority consideration, but not an absolute preference will be given to students of Asian Indian ancestry. The amount of the annual scholarship is at least $500, and the award will be announced before the close of the spring 2010 semester.

SUMMER RESEARCH AT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY
DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 15, 2010
The Materials Research Center at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. The students are paired up with some of the leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in science or engineering who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible. The program dates this year are June 22 to August 21. Participants are paid a $4000 stipend and are provided a travel allowance and on-campus housing.

FREEMAN INDONESIA NONPROFIT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 15, 2010
The Freeman Indonesia Nonprofit Internship Program (FINIP) is a 9 week experience, from June 15 to August 17, 2010, that, aims to develop student leaders and strengthen the nonprofit sector in Indonesia. The program will select and pair 10 Indonesian students pursuing U.S. degrees with 10 U.S. undergraduates and arrange internships for them to work together in an Indonesian nonprofit organization. It will take place in three cities: Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta. All program-related costs will be covered.

STUDY ABROAD IN OAXACA, MEXICO

Join UConn Professor Mark Overmyer-Velázquez in a 3 week study abroad program this summer in Oaxaca, Mexico. The program runs from July 30 to August 14, 2010, but students will take part in a week’s worth of pre-trip orientation and historical and cultural immersion before departure. The 100 Years of Women Scholarship Fund was established to honor a current UCONN undergraduate or graduate student (who will be enrolled for the Fall 2010 semester) or high school senior planning to enroll in the University of Connecticut, who has demonstrated a commitment to women’s issues through service to their community or school. The scholarship award ranges from $250 to $1,000.

The University of Connecticut's Upward Bound/ConnCAP Program is looking for summer Tutor/Counselors.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE LEARNING COMMONS?
Focus groups are being held to get feedback from undergraduates on the spaces and services offered in the Learning Commons (Level 1 of the Babbidge Library). Please join us for small hour-long, audio-recorded group discussions in the Library hosted by University of Connecticut Librarians, during which we will ask for your evaluation of the current services and physical layout of the Learning Commons. Participants must be currently enrolled undergraduates on the Storrs campus and be at least 18 years old.
Your privacy is very important to us! Email addresses we gather in order to schedule focus groups will be kept only temporarily and will not be a part of the information we formally gather as a part of the focus group.
