HONORS REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Honors Course List – Fall 2009
The undergraduate career is a time to explore and what better way than through a more enriching experience of an Honors course.  The complete list of Honors classes can be found HERE.  Watch updates over the next few weeks to hear more about featured courses.

Fall 2009 Registration is underway!
Registration for Fall 2009 began on Monday, March 23.  Students will have access to the registration system beginning on the date listed as their enrollment appointment in PeopleSoft.  Students should also review the Honors registration page HERE for a listing of Honors courses and information regarding priority registration, meeting with your Honors advisor, and more. 

ATTENTION SOPHOMORES!
Sophomore Honors Certificate applications are due next month! The application can be found on the Honors "Forms" page, located HERE.The completed form should be returned to the Honors office in CUE 419 by Friday, April 17. Students will be informed of successful completion of the Sophomore Honors certificate in September.

Honors Core Course Requirement
Students who entered Honors at UConn as first-year students in fall 2007 or after are required to earn at least three Honors credits in an approved Honors Core Curriculum course in order to meet the requirements for Sophomore Honors. You need to take this class sometime during your first or second years.  View the Honors course list HERE to see the listing of approved Honors Core courses.  The requirements for Sophomore Honors are located HERE

NEW HONORS CORE COURSE OFFERINGS FOR FALL 2009 – ONE CORE COURSE REQUIRED FOR SOPHOMORE HONORS
Check out the listing of Honors Core courses for Fall 2009 at the top of the Honors course list HERE! There are a few new offerings for next semester and some new variations of previous courses.  Be sure to also check the links to the course descriptions to find out what these courses are all about.  For those of you who are trying to plan ahead, the core curriculum page also lists the courses that are tentatively planned for Spring 2010.  Freshmen and sophomores should remember that the successful completion of an Honors Core course is required toward the requirements of the Sophomore Honors certificate. 

Honors Participation Requirement
To remain in good standing in the Program, students MUST earn Honors credit in at least one Honors course or conversion during each academic year (exceptions are made for students studying abroad). The Honors Office reviews class enrollments at the end of the spring semester.  If you have not taken any honors work this year, you will be eligible for dismissal from the Program.

 

 

ATTENTION SENIORS! FINAL STEPS TO GRADUATION IN HONORS

SENIORS – SUBMIT YOUR THESIS ELECTRONICALLY
Seniors, you can submit your thesis electronically and make this significant intellectual achievement available for the world to see! It is highly recommended that as Honors graduates you post your thesis on DigitalCommons@UConn, the institutional repository. IT’S EASY! Once a hard copy of your thesis has been submitted to the Honors Office with a signed approval form, send a copy of your thesis to honors@uconn.edu as an attachment. Your e-mail should also include: Your name, major, title of your thesis, the name of your thesis advisor, your graduation date, an abstract and 3 to 5 keywords that you feel best describe the subject matter of your thesis! (A hardcopy of the Honors thesis must be submitted to the Honors Office with a signed approval form according to posted deadlines.)

SENIORS – SUBMIT YOUR MANDATORY HONORS SENIOR SURVEY by April 15
Required Honors Senior Survey Due: April 15, 2009

Graduating Honors students are required to complete the on-line survey located at https://secure.uconn.edu/honors/applicationsv2/seniorsurvey/index.php.  This survey will give you a chance to reflect on and share with us your experiences in the Honors Program.  We value your feedback!  In addition, we want to hear about your future plans.  After you fully complete the survey, you will be able to return and update your future plan information using your permanent e-mail address (not your UConn address) as your logon id.  The survey is due on April 15th.

 

Don't forget! OAKLAWN SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

Each year, the Honors Program sponsors the Oaklawn Scholarship for as many as four exceptional Honors students. The competition is open to sophomores and juniors who did NOT receive merit financial aid from the University. Recipients of this prestigious scholarship are chosen according to academic excellence, involvement in the Honors community, and leadership values. Students will receive awards of up to $2,000 per year ($1,000 per semester) to be applied directly to the student’s fee bill. The deadline to apply this year is March 31, 2009.

Applications can be found online and returned to the Honors office in CUE 419, or emailed to honors@uconn.edu.

 

ROUNDTABLE ON HUMAN RIGHTS

On Monday April 6, the University of Connecticut will host a visit with Dr. Zonke Majodina, Deputy Chairperson and Commissioner of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). In addition to holding the position of deputy chairperson, Dr. Majodina has the responsibility for the Rights to Equality, the Rights of Non-Nationals and monitors human rights issues in the Northern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa. The various positions she holds entail governance and the utilization of acquired expertise in advancing the human rights agenda. Dr. Majodina will highlight the South African Commission’s approach to Human Rights monitoring, assessment, awareness raising, training and education, as well as her work with the United Nations Human Rights Council.

CAMPUS ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

GET INVOLVED ON CAMPUS WITH THE OFFICE OF COMMUNITY STANDARDS!

The Office of Community Standards is recruiting students to serve on the Peer Review Board and Academic Misconduct Boards. This joint position will give students an opportunity to learn more about themselves while increasing critical thinking, analysis and effective communication skills. Student Board Members will determine responsibility for alleged cases of academic misconduct (in the context of a board with Faculty members) and will review probationary status for students eligible for removal from this status. Students should have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and be in good student conduct standing (ie, not on University probation). Applications are available online and are due by April 10, 2009. Interested students should fill out the application form and email it to community.standards@uconn.edu or drop if off in the Office of Community Standards located on the 3rd floor of Wilbur Cross in room 301.

 

STUDY ABROAD IN LONDON THIS SUMMER OR FALL

UCONN in London offers you the chance to study, work, and live in one of the most international cities in the world for the summer or for an entire semester! Spaces are still available for UConn Summer in London, which runs May 16 through June 28. The application deadline has been extended to April 1, 2009! Course offerings include.. Shakespeare (ENGL 3503/3505: 3 credits), World Musics of London (INTD 3993), Museum Cultures (ANTH 3093/ARTH 3093), and London’s Global Geographies (GEOG 3120/HIST 3993). UConn in London for the fall semester focuses on community service and global citizenship. The program combines unique coursework with hands-on service experience through a partnership with Community Service Volunteers, a world-renown non-profit organization in the UK!

BECOME A PATH MENTOR!

Become a mentor! If you would like to provide a great experience for an incoming Honors student and have an impact on the future of PATH, volunteer to be a mentor! The incoming class will be a large one, so lots of mentors are needed. Applications are available in the Honors Office and are due April 17.

    • Scavenger Hunt – Sunday, April 5 at 2:00 p.m. outside on the side of Wilson that faces Rt. 195
    • End of the Year Bash – Sunday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the Shippee Dining Room
