OTHER OPPORTUNITIES FROM THE OFFICE OF NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS!

Are you interested in studying an aspect of the American Presidency?
Here’s an opportunity to deepen your interest while still at UConn!

The Center for the Study of the Presidency's Presidential Fellows Program offers a year-long opportunity to study all aspects of the American Presidency and the public policy-making process. Each Fellow undertakes an original research project on an aspect of the modern Presidency and is responsible for producing a 15-page paper on that subject, due in May. Fellows attend a fall and a spring leadership conference in Washington, D.C.  The conferences are comprised of policy workshops at which Fellows discuss national issues with Presidential scholars, and are briefed by senior government officials and nationally recognized public policy experts. Lastly, fellows participate in two essay contests and compete for publication in our annual anthology of the 20 best Center Fellows papers: A Dialogue on Presidential Challenges and Leadership. Successful Fellows have strong academic credentials, a demonstrated interest in the institution of the Presidency, and an interest in public policy and public service. All academic majors are eligible! UConn may select one student to participate each year. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, March 18, 2009!

Students wishing to apply for the Presidential Fellows Program should submit the following materials to Marlene Coughlin, Program Assistant, Office of National Scholarships, CUE Bldg, Rm 419, marlene.coughlin@uconn.edu:

  • a two page statement of interest that follows the essay instructions provided below
  • a 1-2pp resume
  • a letter of recommendation from one faculty member who has taught the student in a relevant subject.
  • Students should also have discussed the possible project with one member of the faculty prior to applying to the program.

Essay instructions: Please identify a specific issue or phenomenon related to the American presidency that interests you.  In two double-spaced pages explain how you understand the issue or phenomenon.  Explain why it interests you and what kinds of questions you have that you would like to explore if you had a significant amount of time to do some research or exploration of this subject.  What would you hope to gain from such an inquiry?  Please identify at least one member of the faculty with whom you have spoken about completing a project related to this issue.
