Oaklawn Scholarship

University of Connecticut sophomores and juniors who are enrolled in the Honors Program and did not receive University merit financial aid upon entrance to the University are eligible to apply for the Oaklawn Scholarship. This endowed scholarship consists of a renewable grant that is directly applied toward the student’s tuition. Selection is based on a combination of academic excellence, involvement in UConn’s Honors Program, and leadership. 

The Oaklawn Scholarship is awarded to as many as four Honors students per year. The amount of the scholarship is $1,000 per semester. The awards will be applied to the scholarship recipient’s tuition fee bill beginning in fall. Recipients who meet the scholarship’s requirements of remaining in good standing in the Honors Program and submitting annual reports of their activities will continue to receive the scholarship each semester until they graduate.

To apply, students must submit an “Oaklawn Scholarship Application,” an unofficial transcript, two letters of recommendation from faculty or staff, and a 1-2 page response to the questions listed on the application. Applications should be submitted to the Honors Program office, in the CUE Building, Room 419, Unit 2147, Storrs, CT 06269 or may be emailed to honors@uconn.edu, subject line: “Oaklawn Application.” The application deadline is April 2, 2012.

2011 Oaklawn Scholarship Recipients
juliana macswan

Juliana MacSwan is an elementary education major in the Neag School of Education.  She plans to continue to do research with Project M2:  Mentoring Young Mathematicians, and compare urban and suburban school results from kindergarten field testing, collecting qualitative data about classroom culture as well as analyzing and comparing quantitative test scores.  She enjoys Honors Council, Connecticut Education Association, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Honors Initiative for Prospective Students, Residence Hall Association, and UConn Students for Christ.  She has also tutored through various semester long Community Outreach programs in the Windham School District.  

dana navalance

Dana Navalance is an accounting major with interest in pursuing a concentration in marketing. Through the honors program she has recently studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa where she interned with the Operation HOPE organization. Through this internship she taught financial literacy to high school aged students in underprivileged areas as well as experienced the magnificent culture of South Africa. Outside of the honors program, Dana is a member of the women’s club lacrosse team, as well as chief financial officer for the team. She is also a member of several of UConn’s clubs and organizations.

Emily Pizzale is a senior psychology major from Vermont with minors in criminal justice, women’s studies and human rights. She recently spent the semester abroad in Cape Town, South Africa where she interned at a rape crisis center. Emily has been an employee at the UConn Women’s Center for the past three years, where she works as a program assistant and co-chairs SURJ (Students United for Reproductive Justice). Emily has been very involved at UConn and has also maintained an excellent GPA. She hopes to write her thesis on the correctional system’s treatment of Black females in the United States.

 

 

2010 Oaklawn Scholarship Recipients

Isabella Pilato, is working toward a degree in English and Classics with a minor in French. She intends to incorporate all three disciplines into a career of writing, editing, translating, and teaching. As a national scholarship nominee with research interests in tracing literary traditions across time—from antiquity to the Renaissance and beyond—she hopes to pursue graduate studies in literature. For the past year she has served as assistant rhetoric teacher through the Potter’s School (an online correspondence program for homeschooled students), and her University Scholar project discusses training in classical rhetoric and its effect on British authors. She was recently inducted into the Connecticut Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Jorge Rodrigues, a native of Valencia, Venezuela, is a Political Science and History double major and a Middle East Studies minor. He is currently writing his honors thesis on the role of social media in the Iranian revolution that began in ‘09. Following his graduation in the fall of ’10, he hopes to attend the London School of Economics. This past year, Jorge was the Student Affairs Officer in the Stamford campus, where he also founded the Stamford Honors Council. Previously an editor of the Nutmeg Yearbook, a member of the UConn Rowing Team, and Zero Tolerance, he also co-founded the successful design company, Sparklight Studios. Finally, Jorge recently traveled to Washington D.C. on an alternative spring break to protest Stop-Loss and the U.S. involvement in Iraq with his fellow Husky student activists.
Alex Upton is a double major in International Relations and Economics and additionally has done extensive work in studying Mandarin Chinese including studying abroad in Beijing in the spring of 2010. Alex has participated in Honors Alternative Spring Breaks to the Gulf Coast, UConn Model UN, and Community Outreach, and founded the Chinese Language Club at UConn. After college Alex is interested in pursuing careers in any number of fields including international diplomacy, international economic development, and conflict resolution.

 

 

2009 Oaklawn Scholarship Recipients
1 Mark Connolly is pursuing a dual degree in economics and accounting with a particular focus on environmental economics.  Following college, he hopes to become active in environmental research and am weighing the option of attempting to become a professor in that field.  In his free time he takes part in Honors Council, the Frisbee team, Garden club, Wilderness club and Advocates for Corporate Social Responsibility.  Along with those clubs, Mark has also traveled to New Orleans for two alternative spring breaks.
2 Jennifer Kalita is pursuing her B.A. in Spanish and Political Science. She has aspirations to become an attorney focusing on International and Corporate Law. During spring 2008, Jennifer studied abroad with UConn in Granada, Spain, an intensive learning program in which a student is completely immersed in the Spanish culture and language. Jennifer has been involved in Peer Allies Through Honors, Honor’s Council, Spanish Club, Undergraduate Student Government, and currently she is the President of the Law and Business Society. Furthermore, she was accepted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in 2009. Finally, her honors thesis topic will revolve around the Unlawfulness of the Iraq War and specifically the actions and characteristics of the American presidency that may have influenced the war’s occurrence.
3 Margaret McCarthy is a Political Science and Economics double major and Human Rights minor in the class of 2011. She hopes to live and work internationally, but also in the U.S. Federal Government in D.C. after graduate school. She has participated in both honors spring break trips to the Gulf Coast, and worked on a House of Representatives bill for rebuilding the Gulf Coast. She is a member of the Global Leadership Commission and of UConn’s Model United Nations. During summer 2009 she went to Guatemala to work in economic development, and hopes to conduct her thesis research in socioeconomic development.
4 Christine McMeekin is a mathematics major. She will pursue a PhD in mathematics to study abstract algebra or number theory. During summer 2009, Christine was a counselor at PROMYS, a program in number theory for high school students. During summer 2009 she participated in the Park City Mathematics Institute, an REU at the University of Utah, and a summer school in algebra at the University of Alberta. Christine is the president of the math club and is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Pi Mu Epsilon.

Meghan Rickard is a communications major graduating in 2011. Throughout her years here at UConn, she has been involved with the honors program as a facilitator for both INTD 1784 and INTD 3784. Outside of the honors program, she is the alumni liaison in the Student Alumni Association and a member of the UConn Marching and Pep Bands. During summer 2009 she traveled to Toulouse, France with the UConn Study Abroad Program, where she will took upper level French classes and had a great, cultural experience.
